About the Owner

"The biggest reason I got involved in this business was the intrigue of what all could be created by and with a simple metal box," Jeff Lange, founder of A Box 4 U, said. The result from that initial curiosity has since become a successful portable storage company located in Wichita, KS., that has evolved to meet the needs of industry. Founded in 1998, A Box 4 U focuses on one philosophy – listening to and meeting the needs of its clients. After graduating from Kansas State University, Lange was first involved in agri‐business and his family's farm. A few years later, he started working in the real estate business and quickly became involved in several entrepreneurial activities.

"The ability to grow existing companies and their products, as well as create new businesses, is extremely motivating for me," he said. Lange attributes his success in entrepreneurship to the work he completed on the family farm in Kansas. He also points to his parents as a heavy influence on his day‐to‐day work and his entrepreneurial spirit. "They worked hard and smart together to continue to farm, raise a family, insist on their children's education and ultimately buy land and grow that farm into one of the largest operations in Sumner County, Kansas," he said. "They both had an entrepreneurial interest that always intrigued me."

While Lange has enjoyed pursuing his entrepreneurial interests, he has learned a lot, including a lesson in failure when a company didn't work out the way he had wanted it to. Although he learned this difficult lesson the hard way, it has never deterred him from looking for the next opportunity.

Fortunately, A Box 4 U has become a sound investment for Lange. From the birth of the company, when he was approached with the idea to start a portable storage company, Lange knew A Box 4 U was going to be success. "A Box 4 U has evolved from being created as a strictly portable storage company with portable storage units available for rent to retail business," Lange said. "Over the years, A Box 4 U has gradually become a business that services far more commercial contractors than retail enterprises. Our products have become far more diverse and complex due to our willingness to listen to our customers' needs and create products and services to fit them.

"We constantly strive to be creative, developing products that aren't yet available from any other source. Our willingness to do the much tougher thing and create products and ask the client what they need rather than offer products and tell our customers, 'This is what we have for you to choose from,' has made a big difference in our company's success."

In Lange's opinion, being an entrepreneur does require certain skills, such as having the knowledge of how to effectively start up a company. "Finding and keeping good people needed at each position is another important skill that has been necessary at every stage of this business," he said. "After that is the skill of how to run a business efficiently and with a plan of the future, along with having the wiliness or understanding that change is inevitable."

Lange is continuously looking to the future and knows what he wants for his company, which is to see A Box 4 U become the best portable storage company in the world. He also wants his company to become the best at listening to what the customers' wants are, as well as understanding their needs.

Lange's career has been a gradual process of growth and dealing with opportunities and obstacles. However, it is important for any business to not grow beyond its capability to perform, Lange said. 'You always want growth, but it has to be growth that is planned and manageable," he said. 'Be prepared to work harder, smarter and longer than everyone else."

When Lange isn't working to provide the best customer service possible, he enjoys spending time with his wife of 30 years, Patti, and their four children.
